Getting started

Allow access to your photos, and CleanPhone scans your library on your iPhone. The Clean tab shows how much space you can free and what it found: duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, blurry photos, large videos, screen recordings, Live Photos and contacts. Swipe lets you go through your photos month by month: left to delete, right to keep. More has CleanPhone Pro, settings and help.

Common questions

I deleted photos, but my free space didn't change. Deleted photos and videos stay in Photos › Albums › Recently Deleted for 30 days, as they do when you delete in Photos. Empty that album to get the space back straight away.

Why does iOS ask me to confirm every delete? iOS requires it for every app that deletes photos; no app can skip it. CleanPhone asks once for all the photos you selected.

Can CleanPhone clear app caches or "System Data"? No. iOS does not allow any app to touch other apps' files or System Data. Apps that claim to are not telling the truth. CleanPhone frees space where an app can: photos, videos and contacts.

What does Remove Live do? It keeps the photo and removes the short video of a Live Photo, which is most of the file. The date, place, favourite mark and albums stay. The Info panel in Photos shows only the photo's size, so that number doesn't change even though space is freed.

How does Compress work? It scales a video down to 1080p or 720p and keeps its HDR, orientation and sound. A video is only replaced if the copy is at least 20% smaller. Slo-mo videos are skipped. Keep the app open while it works; iOS pauses it in the background.

How does CleanPhone pick the best photo? For duplicates it keeps your favourite if there is one, otherwise the copy with the highest resolution, and selects the other copies. For similar shots you choose: press and hold the one you like, or open it, and tap Set as Best. Then Select Extras selects the rest. To keep a whole set, tap Keep All and it won't show up again.

Blurry lists photos that aren't blurry. Choose the Sensitivity at the top: Low shows only very blurry photos, High shows more. Press and hold a photo and choose Not Blurry to take it off the list for good.

Why does a burst count as one photo? Photos shows a burst as one photo, and deleting it deletes every photo in the burst. Its tile says "Burst" with the number of photos, and its size covers all of them.

Some photos are "only in iCloud". With Optimize iPhone Storage, some originals are kept only in iCloud. Download and Check on the Clean tab downloads them so they can be checked too. Use Wi-Fi and keep the app open.

Can I undo a contact merge? Yes, the last merge or delete, on the Contacts screen. The contact that was kept goes back to how it was; the others come back without their notes, because iOS doesn't let apps read contact notes.
